Appendicitis is defined as an inflammation of the inner lining of the vermiform appendix that spreads to its other parts. This condition is a common and urgent surgical illness. The appendix is a blind-ending tubular structure arising from the cecum. Appendicitis results from an acute inflammation of the appendix and creates the most common abdominal surgical emergency.
Typically presents initially with pain around the navel and later goes to the right lower abdomen.
Diverticular disease of the colon begins as diverticulosis (colonic outpouchings), which may develop into diverticulitis (diverticular inflammation and perforation). Diverticulitis can be classified as mild, moderate, or severe. Treatment is based on clinical findings and results from imaging studies.
Typically presents with lower abdominal pain, was in the left side, may or may not have fever or chills, and not feeling well
Breast masses are broadly classified as benign or malignant. Common causes of benign breast lesions include fibrocystic disease, fibroadenoma, intraductal papilloma, and abscess. Malignant breast disease encompasses many histologic types that include, but are not limited to, in situ ductal or lobular carcinoma, infiltrating ductal or lobular carcinoma, and inflammatory carcinoma. The main concern of many women presenting with a breast mass is the likelihood of cancer. Reassuringly, most breast masses are benign.
Breast cancer is the common term for a set of breast tumor subtypes with distinct molecular and cellular origins and clinical behavior. Most of these are epithelial tumors of ductal or lobular origin. Worldwide, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed life-threatening cancer in women and the leading cause of cancer death among women.
Signs and symptoms
Early breast cancers may be asymptomatic, and pain and discomfort are typically not present. If a lump is discovered, the following may indicate the possible presence of breast cancer:
Change in breast size or shape, even if no lump is palpable
Skin dimpling or skin changes
Recent nipple inversion or skin change, or nipple abnormalities
Single-duct discharge, particularly if blood-stained
Axillary lump
Invasive colorectal cancer is a preventable disease. Early detection through widely applied screening programs is the most important factor in the recent decline of colorectal cancer in developed countries. Colon cancer is the most common, and the most preventable, form of gastrointestinal cancer.
Most cancers are asymptomatic until the disease is advanced. Blood may be noted in the stool, but occult bleeding is more common; patients may often present with iron deficiency anemia. Increasing obstruction of the large bowel may cause symptoms such as constipation, change in bowel habits, and, in advanced cases, feculent vomiting. The tumor may hemorrhage acutely, perforate, or cause pain by invasion of adjacent organs.
Surgery to remove skin lesions and soft tissue masses on the surface of the skin are available. Dr. Orji can also treat masses that are deeper in the body. She uses a variety of minimally invasive surgical techniques to remove the lesion or mass and can test the tissue for cancer and other diseases.
Lipoma removal
A lipoma is a lump of fat that grows in the soft tissues of the body. Generally, lipomas are noncancerous, but they can be uncomfortable. Dr. Orji can remove the growth and test it for cancer.
Pilonidal cyst excision
A pilonidal cyst develops near your tailbone when a buildup of dead skin, oils, and hair clogs your skin. Dr. Orji, makes a small incision to drain an infected cyst and then remove the growth. Depending on the size of the cyst, and patient’s tolerance, this may be done in the office.
What general surgery services are available?
As a board-certified general surgeon, Dr. Orji performs a variety of general surgery procedures that focus on optimizing your overall health and wellness.
Using minimally invasive and traditional open surgery techniques, Dr. Orji offers surgeries like:
Mediport placement
Mediport placement is a minor surgical procedure to connect a mediport and a vein to a catheter. This type of surgery is necessary for long-term intravenous (IV) access for medications or chemotherapy.
Abscess drainage
Abscess drainage is a surgical procedure to treat abscesses in the skin. The procedure involves creating an incision to drain infected fluids. If the abscess is large, Dr. Orji places gauze to help fluids continue to drain while the wound heals.
Surgical removal of small growths typically requires only a local anesthetic and Dr. Orji performs the procedure in-office. If you have a growth or wound that’s large, your procedure may be in a hospital setting under general anesthesia.
In addition to her extensive surgical experience, Dr. Orji provides comprehensive wound care services on-site.
